Kanab, Utah, is home to the Best Friends Animal Society Sanctuary, the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals and where at least a thousand animals are looking to be adopted.
Founded in 1984, Best Friends Animal Society is a leading national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. In addition to running lifesaving programs in partnership with more than 2,600 animal welfare groups across the country, Best Friends has regional centers in New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Salt Lake City. Over the years, Best Friends has continued to be a pioneer in the no-kill movement and has helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters nationwide from an estimated 17 million per year to about 800,000. That means there are still nearly 2,200 dogs and cats killed every day in shelters, just because they don’t have safe places to call home. Best Friends is determined to bring the country to no-kill by the year 2025.
Best Friends’ Sanctuary is a popular visitor spot, amassing more than 30,000 travelers every year. Because of this, and with more animals being saved from being euthanized and looking for their forever homes, Best Friends is opening a new location that will help bridge the gap between pet-friendly hotels and pet care centers.
This coming August, Best Friends is opening the Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile, a pet-centric, 40-room lodging option for travelers and pets.
“Visitors need a lodging complex that will cater not only to them, but pets, too, including those who travel with their own furry companions and others who might be considering adopting from our Sanctuary,” said Brooks Bradbury, director of hospitality at Best Friends Animal Society.
Designed by WOW Atelier of Salt Lake City, the hotel is comprised of two simple, low-slung structures—the Roadhouse and the Mercantile—that sit unobtrusively within Kanab’s landscape of flat open land and undulating hills. The Roadhouse features 30 regular rooms, eight suites and two two-level suites, while the Mercantile houses reception, a common area space for guests, a complimentary vegan continental breakfast bar, and retail that includes Best Friends- and Roadhouse-branded merchandise as well as vegan grab-and-go items, beer and wine.
Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile will be located at the center of the “Golden Circle,” thus serving as an ideal base camp for day trips to Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon National Parks, and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. They will also be located just a few miles from the Sanctuary. Visitors and guests can enjoy convenient, complimentary shuttle transportation to and from the Sanctuary so they can visit all the adorable animals and maybe bring home a new furry companion. And even if you aren’t looking to adopt, you can still contribute to Best Friends’ cause. In addition to accepting donations, revenue from the hotel will support Best Friends’ efforts to end the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters by 2025.
The new hotel will provide an ideal in-town location for activities for guests and the community, including Best Friends adoptions, presentations, musical performances, videos, lectures and discussions, art fairs, farmers markets, yoga classes and more that will further engage visitors in a Best Friends-designed experience. Also in conjunction with the Sanctuary, the new hotel will have organized Best Friends member activities, including volunteer opportunities and pet sleepovers.
Guests can feel comfortable bringing their pets along for the trip with such pet-friendly features as guest rooms outfitted with special fabrics and materials, pet introduction doors—a two-door entry that ensures the pet will not slip out, room furnishings built 18 inches or higher to avoid pet entrapment or accidents, nooks for sleeping featuring pet mattresses, as well as communal complimentary pet washing stations, a fenced-in park with a water feature, and pet walking services and sitting, upon arrangement.
Room rates range from $159-$299. For reservations and further information, please call 435-644-3400 or visit the Best Friends Roadhouse and Mercantile website.
